I miss my Audi. Sure I think I literally spent more time working on it than I did actually driving it, and sure it was difficult to track down parts for a 1 of 1,000 imported 20+ years ago type of car (damn you, power steering filtered banjo bolt), but man, that 5-cylinder sound. It wasn’t the fastest thing out there, but it was a lot of fun and I miss it.

What happened to it?

I sold it in January 2014, and it went to an even better home. Truth be told, I didn’t have the money to give it exactly what it needed, nor the motivation since it was pretty rusty underneath (though still solid). Ultimately the decision to sell it was made because I decided that if I was serious about wanting one, I should just sell mine and buy a better example (buying a 90 Quattro 20V is mostly a waiting game since there are so few; and I had time to wait).
I sold it for more than I bought it for, and then ended up using that money just a couple weeks later to put a down payment on a house when we ended up just a couple thousand shy of our intended down payment.
So yeah, long story, but it all worked out for the best apart from me still having no second car. Although... I did get my wife an ‘05 Subaru Legacy GT... so I guess that kind of counts. :D

I still see quite a few Audi 80s and 90s (4000 in the US?) around here. They seem to have great durability and rust protection for their age.

Older ones are the 4000 and 5000 in the US, I think. Mine was a 90 Quattro 20V (B3 generation). I live in Indiana and there were really not many ever here in the first place, I think. Even now, I just did a nationwide Craigslist search and came up with a total of 3 examples for sale. One in New York, one in Colorado, and one in California.
There could be more 80s around or something... but those aren’t nearly as interesting to me as my AWD, 5-cylinder DOHC, 5-speed manual 90Q20V.

Prices for good condition 90 Quattros have gone a bit up. Only three nationwide, damn. I can fully understand that you miss it.

I miss updates on the old Quattro too :) it did seem like a bit of a bear to keep on top of maintenance-wise, but it’s tricky to say with that kind of thing. My Alfa’s been a ballache for the last couple of months, but after I got over the top of the bell-curve it’s been plain sailing (so far...)

Haha, well some of the issue was my own lack of experience in working on cars. It taught me a lot just by trying to fix its problems. And I think most of the problems were just from lack of maintenance by the previous owner(s).
The new owner described it on his Instagram when he said that I “took it from dangerous to drivable,” and that he was trying to “take it from drivable to desirable.” He’s doing a good job of that. He even just drove it from Michigan to Seattle (a 2,000+ mile trip) as part of his move out there. And it did fine until 15 minutes away from the end when the fuel filter gave out. He was able to patch it and get home though.
